Sci Fi to Syfy. It’s a Change.
A few days back, [CNN Fortune] reported the change that the Sci Fi Channel made. That change is getting rid of “Sci Fi” and replacing it with “Syfy”. When you now visit [Syfy] you will find the site more interactive and it is more than just a TV channel that played many episodes of [Star Trek]. David Howe, President of Syfy, says this name, logo, and brand change needed to happen and was in the works for sometime now.
Why?
Between the late 1990s and early 2000s, the Sci Fi Channel started to make a significant transaction in terms of viewers and the number of inquired shows. Then in 2008, [Nielson] reported that the Sci Fi channel jumped to the No. 5 spot, among cable networks, with 1.3 million viewers that was up 7% from the previous year. So it is obvious Sci Fi was heading somewhere. This somewhere included bringing new original shows to the network and publicizing information and media places other than the television. In addition, the Sci Fi logo could not be used globally because of the rights, so if they wanted to go global they needed a name change.
Syfy is now more imagination with Sci Fi being stict science fiction. It’s a change. See the change happening to the logo via a YouTube video below.
